o VIA KT400 AGP support (Nicolas Mailhot)
This doesn't seem to work on my setup, dmesg says:

Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: Detected Via Apollo Pro KT400 chipset
agpgart: unable to determine aperture size.

My machine has A7V8X motherboard with KT400 chipset and Radeon 9700
Pro running AGP 8X with sidebanding and fast-writes in Windows XP
so the setup itself should be ok.

AGP aperture is set to 64 megs in BIOS, other settings on auto.

I checked the code out a bit and the register supposed to be
containing the aperture size contains 0x1b while the values in the
array it is tested against are 0, 128, 192, 224, 240, 248 and 252
(192 being 64 megs)... Could this be caused by AGP 3.0 or something
that VIA handles differently than before? Anything else I could
test or help get it to work?

I hadn't realised that was an AGP 3.0 chip. Its likely that we'll
need to change things to use different routines than the generic
ones if this is the case. If it is the case, then it shouldn't be too
hard to figure out what to change, as long as VIA have the specs
available.. I'll dig around when I get back on Monday.

For the record (more of a recap of previous messages over the last few days), DRM is still kinda broken, at least for my Radeon card.

Arjan's fixes seemed to have fixed the Rage 128 DRM but Radeon DRM is still mighty sketchy. I'm scared to let my GL-based screensaver kick in lest it lock my system up. His fixes supressed the kernel oops that occurred when starting XFree and the unavailability of hardware acceleration in DRI games, but the end result is still that no DRI applications will run correctly in 2.4.20-ac1, or anything past -rc2-ac3 for that matter (which as you can see below is when the DRM updates were made in foresight of the new xfree 4.3 drm interface.

I was unable to catch any kernel messages after starting GL-based apps, but it has just occurred to me that remote access might still work and I could dump any kernel messages from there. I will write some more later...

This is the initial 2.4.20-ac merge up. This one may still have a few
small funnies to shake out especially in the DRM updates.
Linux 2.4.20-ac1
I've just compiled "linux-2.4.20-ac1".

It reports "DMA disabled" messages on boot for all of my IDE drives:

| VP_IDE: VIA vt82c686a (rev 22) IDE UDMA66 controller on pci00:07.1
| ide0: BM-DMA at 0xd000-0xd007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
| ide1: BM-DMA at 0xd008-0xd00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
| hda: WDC WD400BB-53AUA1, ATA DISK drive
| hda: DMA disabled
| blk: queue c02918a0, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
| hdc: WDC WD1000BB-00CAA0, ATA DISK drive
| hdd: CD-540E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
| hdc: DMA disabled
| blk: queue c0291d0c, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
| hdd: DMA disabled

However, "hdparm" reports DMA mode to be enabled for all drives:

| pc01:~ # hdparm -d /dev/hda
| /dev/hda:
| using_dma = 1 (on)

| pc01:~ # hdparm -d /dev/hdc
| /dev/hdc:
| using_dma = 1 (on)

| pc01:~ # hdparm -d /dev/hdd
| /dev/hdd:
| using_dma = 1 (on)

What might be the reason for this behaviour?

SuSE's start scripts seem to activate DMA mode explicitly only for the
CD-ROM drive ("hdd"), so I suppose that the "DMA disabled" messages the
kernel reports for "hda" and "hdc" are not true.

The same messages I had using "linux-2.4.20-rc4-ac1" and

Its a funny off the VIA driver - it turns DMA off noisily then turnd it
back on quietly for the devices it decies can do DMA/UDMA

Hmmm, I can only find references to dma_off_quietly within the via driver.

Also Alan, you've left your infamous 'x1' in drivers/ide. :)

So would the following make things more explicit?

Are the below lines in the 2.4.20-rc1 patch a little premature?
I don't see any patch code for quotas in the reiserfs and I can't
get quotas to work for reiserfs. Am I missing something?

- usage (also called disk quotas). Currently, it works only for the

I have a testing version available at

You can try it and report to me if it breaks (but I hope it won't)
